What is 30A? We’ve called it “scenic” for years and years, and now the Federal Highway Administration has added Scenic Highway 30A to its elite list of scenic routes in America. The inclusion of 34 National Scenic Byways and 15 All-American Roads were designated by the federal program–the first new additions to the list since 2009.
Scenic Highway 30A is a 26-mile road that hugs Florida’s Emerald Coast and includes Seaside, FL, Rosemary Beach, Grayton Beach, Alys Beach and many other beach communities along its route. You can also see most of the rare coastal dune lakes found here that span the length of the highway. The area itself–south Walton County in northwest Florida between Panama City Beach and Destin, Florida–has become geographically known as 30A, though you won’t find it on a map other than the scenic highway itself.
The new roads and byways chosen in 2021 cover 28 states and include our very own Scenic Highway 30A which runs along the Gulf of Mexico coast. “The National Scenic Byways Program brings new jobs, tourism, and other benefits to communities along these scenic roads, which are often located in parts of the country where such resources are desperately needed and harder to come by,” said Scenic America President Mark Falzone.
